What does Apraxia mean ?

Apraxia takes it's name from a neurological condition. This is defined as:

apraxia noun

  1. inability to make purposeful movements
  2. A disorder of voluntary movement consisting of the partial or complete inability to execute purposeful movements without the impairment of muscular power and coordination.
  3. A psychomotor defect characterized by the inability to make proper use of a known object.

We use this term as an analogy to media access and social class.

Where do you guys play?

The live act is on hiatus for now. We all got burned out on playing shows.

But, Apraxia played several clubs and cafes around Minneapolis, and also in Milwaukee and Detroit. Check out the dates page for a list of our past shows over the last few years. At the moment there is no live performing band, but if you want to book Siren313 as a solo act, contact Apraxia.

Where are you guys from ? / How long have you been a group ?

Siren313 is originally from Detroit. The project was actually born in 1993 while he was in college at Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. After graduation Siren moved back to the Detroit area, until 2002, when he moved to Minneapolis. A year later, Apraxia was re-established and re-invented with a new sound. Dr Watson left the group in 2006. Agent AA7 grew up in Africa and has lived many places but now lives in Minneapolis.

Why did you cover Strangelove and why does it sound so empty and not like Apraxia?

I recorded it for a few reasons. First off, people had been telling me for years that I sounded like David Gahan. I don't agree nor disagree with this. I figured why not try something Depeche Mode? At the very least it would be fun to play live. So I did. The reason the song is so basic and "empty" and not so very "apraxia-like" if because I want people to get their own ideas about how that song should be done. Go ahead and mash it up, mix it up or whatever. That is the whole point. And if you need the tracks separated out so you can remix it, just let me know! I would love to hear what you come up with.

What is the meaning behind this song in German?

I have been told that my song TotenPlatz is somewhat vague. I would like to explain a little about it.

Totenplatz. dead place, a tomb.
The song is about grave robbing. For example, steeling antiquities and selling them on the black market. I used the word totenplatz just because it was fun to say, like Totenhozen or Aufweiderhoeren. I like the word platz because it has found its way into several languages and turned into so many other words like place, plate, plaque, plaza, plastic, plaster...

Why sing this song in German?

I visited Germany only once but while I was there, I made sure to visit as many churches as possible because I am obsessed with the history of religion -- any and all religion. American churches do not have tombs inside the walls of the church. Even famous clergy are buried in graves or adjacent tombs. They are never located in the church itself. When I experienced this in Germany it had a profound effect on me. I gained an appreciation for the preciousness of artifacts that I never had before.

I would like to see the church of bones in France some day.

So that's it. Its a little Macabre. I think its horrible to rob graves. We have lost so much history to thievery.

What style of music do you play?

Well sometimes we are going for a specific style, but sometimes we just experiment. Basically we combine styles. Here are a few of the genres from which we draw inspiration. We've linked them to their Wikipedia articles, which are all very interesting reads.

Where is your next CD coming out?

JANUARY 2010

Why don't you use a guitar ?

We have actually. Apraxia has nothing against guitar! We love a whole bunch of hard rock and metal bands. The first album CyberChrist featured quite a bit of guitar work from Tony Young. There is also one guitar track on Trite Permission.

However, we enjoy the challenge of rocking the house with keyboards only. Guitar has an innate groovieness that is not found in keys. Therefore we have to work harder and be more creative just to get the grove going!

Siren however just purchased a nice Ibanez guitar and says he will start doing more work with guitar. Who knows what direction Apraxia will go.
